Department of Agricultural Education & Studies

Bachelor of Science

Undergraduate Student

Name: Alex Johnk
Home: Walnut, Iowa
Club involvement: I am actively involved in the Farm Op Club. I was the publicity chair last year and am currently serving as the vice president. Farm Ops also got me involved with Post-Secondary Agricultural Students (PAS). I have been chosen to represent the state of Iowa as a PAS state vice president, the first from Iowa State.
Internship: Last summer I had an internship with Iowa Select Farms. I already knew quite a bit about pigs but this internship expanded my horizons and taught me a lot. I also made many connections that will help me out in the future.
Why did you choose agricultural studies? I chose my major because horticulture wasn't a perfect fit for me but I knew I wanted to stay in an agricultural field of study. Agricultural Studies has been the perfect major for me.
What surprised you the most about Iowa State? I was most surprised on the size shock, but soon found a smaller group of close friends to hang out with.
What advice do you have for incoming students? My advice to freshman is to take the introductory classes seriously, most of the higher level courses you take are based on them.
