Why did you choose agricultural studies? "What am I going to do with my life after graduation?" How many college students have NOT asked this question? I knew I wanted to work in agriculture, but I didn't know exactly what I wanted to do. I started my education at Hawkeye Community College, and decided I wanted to get a Bachelor's degree. When it comes to excellent professors and amazing understanding of the agriculture industry, Iowa State is the only 4-year school out there! I chose the agricultural studies program because my classes transferred in smoothly AND I had a chance to take a variety of classes that challenged my skills and matched my interests. It simply was the best fit for me!
What surprised you the most about Iowa State? Looking at Iowa State Brochures, the university looked huge. I was surprised my first day when I saw people I recognized from FFA, high school, Hawkeye Community College and organizations that I was involved in. While the school is large, the agriculture program is personable and fun. My instructors know my name and what I want to do with my life after graduation.
What advice do you have for incoming students? Get involved! There are literally hundreds of clubs and organizations to get involved with on campus! I joined an organization called PAS, Post-Secondary Agriculture Students. I found other students who shared my interests, found a job offer and even won a national contest. With the support of family, friends, and academic advisors, I ran for national office. I now am National President of PAS because I wanted to make a difference!
