Name: Rachel McCulloh |
Home: DeWitt, Iowa |
Club involvement: I was a founding member of the Agricultural Communicators of Tomorrow Club and also served as President and Secretary. I have been active in the Agricultural Education Club, receiving the Outstanding Freshman Award in 2005, Outstanding Leadership Award in 2006 and Outstanding Senior Award in 2008. I have also served as a representative to the Agricultural Education Club on the Agricultural Council. I have also been a member of Alpha Zeta, a professional, service and honorary agricultural fraternity. |
| Internship: During the school year I assist a professor in the AgEdS Department with his research, but each summer I took on a different internship. Through my internships I worked with DeWitt Development Company, Iowa State University Communities Extension, Operation Military Kids with the Iowa 4-H Program, and Iowa State University's Office of University Marketing. Self-initiation and self-direction were important in my internship programs and projects, focusing on communication, public awareness, and marketing strategies. I continue to keep in contact with my past supervisors and the have been a tremendous resource for me. |
| Study Abroad: In May 2006, I participated in a ten day study abroad trip to Norway and Sweden through the horticulture department. I was interested in visiting the countries because of my heritage, but also to gain a better knowledge of agriculture in other countries. The tours through museums and gardens, trying Scandinavian food, and visiting the campus of the University of Norway all made the trip something I would do over again! |
| Why did you choose agricultural education- communications? Agricultural Education-Communications combined the communication classes I was interested in professionally along with the flexibility of taking agricultural science classes. During my freshman and sophomore year I could take several intro classes to get a feel for what I liked. Then during my junior and senior year I put more time and effort into the areas I liked while developing my skills in higher level courses. |
| What advice do you have for incoming students? Start your first year by attending many different club meetings - find a friend or learning community member to do this with and make it a priority. After that pick one or two clubs that have the best fit for you and get to know the juniors and seniors in the club. The upperclassman can be your best resources - their advice is even better than your advisors sometimes! |
